5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Buy, February 20, 2010

I bought these as a Christmas gift for my brother, who's in his 40s. He's been a wannabe drummer for a while and has had a few acoustic drums sets, at least one of very high quality--but he's never had an electronic drum set. (He's jammed with bands, but not played professionally.) He had to sell his last and best drum set and hasn't had a set for a long time. Plus he lives in an apartment. So I saw these at Target for $200 and decided to take a chance, thinking I could always return them if they sucked or were broken.

Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to see him during Christmas and wasn't able to give him the set until 1 week ago, long after I'd lost the receipt, so I was really worried that he wouldn't like them.

Well, I got a call today, after he'd been playing them "hard" for a week and he raved about them. Things he mentioned:

- 100 sounds (each of which is tunable, which I didn't see mentioned in the specs, but was hoping for).
- He says... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars it's a starter kit, July 22, 2010

This review is from: ION Audio Sound Session Complete Electronic Drum Set (Electronics)
this is my first drum set ever, as i had wanted to get my hands busy, and wasn't willing to pay more for the higher end brands. However after a couple of days playing, i realized i may have been penny wise pound foolish. Let me just pen down the pros and cons of this set per my views:

Pros:
1. pricing. it is definitely affordable and a cheap starter kit for ppl who are unsure if they wanted to delve in further, or just get a feel of drumming (where acoustic drums are just not viable)
2. adjustability. the set is such that all pads + footpads are similar, that u can pretty much interswitch anything and adjust the levels/bars anything to be wherever u wanted them to be

Cons:
1. Sound adjustment. the module is fixed, where u can only volume up everything @ 1 go, and not individually. also, there is limited programmability and adjustment on this module. but this is what u would come to expect for the price of this item,
2. Foot pedals. the pedals... Read more

Great value for the money. It was a gift for my nephew who has just started taking lessons but as a former professional I was surprised how good the action was for such a reasonable set. The sound quality was also a lot better than I expected considering the price. Great set for a beginner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Electric Drumset, October 13, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Alesis DM8 Pro Kit Professional Five-Piece Electronic Drumset (Electronics)
I've had a Yamaha DTXpress setup for years. In my opinion, this drum set is a better product. First of all, the looks of these drums are amazing. When I look at the 12", 10", and 8" pads, the set looks like I spent 3k on it. The feel of the real head pads are great. I don't like the feel of hitting rubber pads. The bounce you get off the of the real head pads are just like hitting a real acoustic drum set. This drum set does need some tweaking when you first get. No big deal. Just take the time to adjust the sensitivity and cross talk. Another thing I like about these drums is the fact that I can change out the heads of the drums with any drum head I want as long as they are the right size. I can also do a Mesh conversion if I want for cheap. I can't forget about the cymbals which come in very nice sizes. You can choke them and they have multiple zones. Finally the module. This module has some great built in drum sets. You can customize your own drum set if you want... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Great starter kit, despite having intermediate features, but lifetime is a bit short, January 20, 2012

Alesis has been known for being affordable, unfortunately we have seen that it usually is accompanied by a bunch of kinks and iffy quality. This kit is absolutely an exception to that reputation.

This is an intermediate level kit, it has multizone crash and ride, and has room for an extra trigger. The sounds are pretty good, it isn't all that difficult to create your own kit and alter triggers and sounds to get a "real" sounding kit of your preference. The hihat pedal is pretty good, haven't had any real big problems, though I do see a few "ghosts" of pedals past from Alesis. Occasionally during fast play the open and close sounds will fight each other and you get a very unnatural sound, which has definitely thrown me off for a second. The chokable cymbals are nice features but when you choke them the sound goes immediately to 0, not exactly a good replication of a real cymbal choke.

I would recommend this kit to any beginner, because for the same price as... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Great drum set for the price!, October 14, 2011
This review is from: Alesis DM8 Pro Kit Professional Five-Piece Electronic Drumset (Electronics)
I purchased this for an aging Yamaha kit, I had for several years.
I have had this drum set for about 4 months now.
Overall, it is well designed kit which has held up well to extensive play.
Some components were replaced immediately as I prefer to use Alesis Surge cymbals for a better feel, however the baseline kit is extensive based on what is included.
The high hat pedal is a major upgrade from previous kits.
Its strength in durability and construction, full size drum pads, and good quality sound from the DM8 drum module brain.
One downside is the response from the drum pads and feel. Its not quite up to the standards of rebound from a Roland or Pintech mesh design.
Under heavy play, your fingers will begin to become numb due to shock after a hour or so of play. Anti vibe drumsticks will eliminate much of the hard shock due to the pads.
The other downside is the the drum module does not have the full versasity of higher end drum brains... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to Electronic Drumming...Limited to no Expansion, January 27, 2012
This review is from: Alesis DM6 Session Kit Compact, Five-Piece Electronic Drumset (Electronics)
So what's a drummer to do when they grow up, have kids and don't really have a place to set up their acoustic kit in their house? Yep, I've ventured into the world of electronic drumming!

I didn't purchase this kit on Amazon, but I picked it up a while ago on sale from a big box store.

The value is what really drew me into the DM6 kit. I wasn't sure how much I'd like using an electronic kit, so I didn't want to spend a lot of money on something that would end up just sitting around. The DM6 provides both a good drumming experience and a great value.

The DM6 comes with the DM6 drum module, hi hat, dual zone snare, 3 toms, 2 cymbals and kick drum, along with a decent rack and necessary foot pedals. It doesn't come with a throne, so I picked this up to go with it: Mapex Double Brace Round top Drum Throne... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Great set to play around with!, February 9, 2012
This review is from: Alesis DM6 Session Kit Compact, Five-Piece Electronic Drumset (Electronics)
I've had the Alesis DM6 set for about 2 weeks now, and I love it! I sold my old drum set a few years ago because of living in an apartment and not having much space for it. So after going through withdrawals, I purchased the electronic set. It is by far not a professional set, but if you are looking to just jam out or play around, this is the set for you. There are 15 different set ups to choose from, and I think about 40 preset "grooves" to play along with. Overall, it's a great buy, and a lot of fun, but if you are looking to perform or record anything professional, this is not the set for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars THIS IS EXCELLENT, March 1, 2012
This review is from: Alesis DM6 Session Kit Compact, Five-Piece Electronic Drumset (Electronics)
I have to say electronic kits have come along way since the first Simmons drum kits . Seeing as the pro's used Simmons kits when they first came out most any electronic kit now adays are usually just as good or better and I'm talking about Alesis, Roland, Yamaha, and the new Simmons . This kit is pro as it states on the box (pro rack, toms, and cymbals ) Don't be fooled by the rich boys who think anything under a grand is crap . I know this Alesis targets the pro's and their kits are affordable . If you buy anything else you are paying for the name or for mesh heads or plastic heads which some think are better but the rubber heads do the same thing and last longer . So get this kit if you want a kit that is actually better than anything the pro's used in the 80's (Simmons ) or you will be buying just for having a brand name or supposedly something better when this is just as good . It's like the difference between a Chrysler or a Mercedes . Both great cars and just as loaded but you... Read more
